UEFA has ruled out San Siro as the venue for the 2027 final

Date:

The UEFA Executive Committee has decided not to assign the final of the 2026-2027 Champions League in the men’s category to Milan, because the city council cannot guarantee that the San Siro stadium and its surroundings will not be affected by the remodeling works at the time the match is played.

UEFA reported that its Executive made the decision at its Tuesday meeting in Prague reopen the bidding process to assign a suitable site, to be decided between May and June 2025.

UEFA postponed the decision in May

Last May, UEFA decided that Milan would host the Champions League final in 2027, although it delayed the final announcement until September pending a report on the remodeling of the San Siro.

The European organization, in other words. has given the city of Milan a deadline to guarantee that the San Siro will be available during the planned renovation between the celebration of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games and the Euro 2032 Championship.

Uncertain future

The future of the San Siro since last hosting the Champions League final in 2016 is uncertain with the long-term threat of demolition while Milan and Inter, the tenant clubs, They developed plans to build their own stadiums.

Earlier this month Both clubs rejected a plan to modernize and refurbish the iconic stadium, presented by the Council of the City of Milan.

At the beginning of the year Milan acquired the land in the suburb of San Donato Milanese, hoping to get building permits easier there. For the same reason, Inter set its sights on the districts of Rozzano and Assago, south of the Lombard capital.

This season’s Champions League final will be played in Munich, at the Bayern stadium, and the 2026 final will be played at the Puskas Arena in Budapest.
