The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Committee decided on June 5, 2018 to fine and punish Athletic and Spartak Moscow after incidents that occurred a few months before the second leg of the Europa League round of 32 played in San Mamés. The Bilbao club, under this penalty, will have to pay a fine of 40,000 euros and suffer the partial closure of 2,000 seats in its stadium in the next European competition match played at home.
In economic punishment it is not known, although it is intuited, what happened; but the second penalty, the partial closing of the stands, has expired.
That day, February 22, a member of the Ertzaintza (regional police) died during a pre-match police intervention due to a confrontation between fans of both clubs. Charges against Athletic were insufficient organization, throwing of flares and objects and public disturbances, similar to Spartak.
