The ex-footballer ripped off 3.8 million treasury during his time at Barça

Samuel Eto’o, former footballer of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Mallorca, was sentenced this Monday by a court in Barcelona to one year and ten months in prison for committing four crimes against the Spanish treasury. During the trial in the city of justice in Barcelona, he admitted the facts, although he blamed his father. “It was my father who took care of the child I was then. I recognize it and I will pay for it, but I have always done what my father asked of me,” he assured the judge.

His lawyers have reached an agreement with the Public Prosecution Service and the Public Prosecution Service to prevent him from going to prison. The Public Prosecution Service demanded ten and a half years in prison for the former football player and a fine of 15 million. His representative, José María Mesalles, has been sentenced to one year and four months for the same crimes.

During his time as a Barça player, between 2006 and 2009, Eto’o earned significant income from the exploitation of his image rights at Barça and the sports brand Puma. “The footballer simulated that such rights had been transferred to two companies based in Hungary and Spain to fraudulently reduce their taxes,” the prosecutor’s office said.

The former Cameroon national team player has agreed to pay back 2.5 million illegally obtained sums, which prosecutors estimate are up to the 3.8 million defrauded.
