The FIFA Disciplinary Commission has decided to impose on the president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT), Samuel Eto’o, the ban on attending matches played by Cameroonian national teams in any category for six months.
Eto’o’s suspension is due, according to FIFA, to non-compliance with articles 13 (“Offensive conduct and violations of the principles of fair play”) and 14 (“Improper conduct of players and officials”) of the Disciplinary Code of the highest football body in the world.
Both violations are related to the round of 16 match of the U-20 Women’s World Cup between Brazil and Cameroon, played on September 11, in Bogotá (Colombia), where ‘canarinha’ won 3-1 in extra time.
“The punishment imposed on Mr. Eto’o will prevent him from attending matches of both the men’s and women’s teams of FECAFOOT of any category or age group,” FIFA said, noting that the decision had been notified to the president of the Cameroonian Federation and was effective as of Monday.
The disciplinary committee FIFA accuses the referees of forcing the aforementioned match. The Cameroonian delegation specifically protested against the tying penalty of the Brazilians.
Eto’o’s suspension does not affect his duties as president of the federation, a position to which he was elected in 2021. His mandate has been marred by many controversies and the former goalscorer has even been in open conflict with the government. So, in March he rejected the appointment of Belgian Marc Brys as coach of the men’s team by the Ministry of Sports, although he had to comply with it.
