The number of men who took paternity leave Spain increased during the 2022 World Cupaccording to a study published Thursday, which suggests that the ability to watch games is a determining factor in their decision.
According to a working document of Faculty of Economics of Barcelonawhich uses data from Social security Spanish, during the World Cup, held in Qatar From November 20 to December 18, 2022, “a daily surplus of more than 1,000 men on paternity leave” was recorded.
There was no comparable increase in maternity leave applications
During this period, however, there was no comparable increase in maternity leave requests, according to the study, titled “Paternity leave time use by parents: child care or leisure.”
The number of paternity leaves requested by the self-employed, whose working hours are more flexible, also did not increase.
“We interpret these results as direct evidence that parents (at least some of them) took advantage of their vacation periods for activities not related to child care,” said the work, written by three economists.
“This may mean that this type of benefit is only partially effective in combating gender imbalances2 and suggests that “other policies may be needed to effectively increase men’s contribution to childcare,” concludes he.
In Spainfrom 2021, both fathers and mothers are entitled to 16 weeks of paid leave when their child is born. This leave can be enjoyed once or in installments throughout the first 12 months of the child’s life.
