The Russian Daniel Medvedevfifth seed in Shanghai Masters 1,000, qualified for round of 16 with a tight victory over the Italian Matteo Arnaldi 5-7, 6-4 and 6-4 in two hours and 45 minutes.
The Muscovite lost his temper shortly into the match and attacked the chair umpire, the competition supervisor, the ball boys and the quality of the balls and was given a warning and penalized with one point.
Arnaldi, ranked 29th, won the first set after recovering from a loss of serve in the opening game. In the next two sets, Medvedev fought point-de-point against the Italian and against himself. Arnaldi took advantage to always stay in the match, but was never able to close out a set again.
Medvedev, who won this tournament in 2019 and lost in the round of 32 last year, will play in the round of 16 against the winner of the clash between Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas and Frenchman Alexandre Muller.
The day’s program was busy due to the need to make up for matches postponed the day before due to rain, but the weather held steady and the outdoor courts remained unused.
