Sinner fought Etcheverry and went to the round of 16 in Shanghai

Date:

Jannik Sinner qualified this Sunday for Round of 16 in Shanghaipenultimate Masters 1,000 of the season, thanks to a late reaction that allowed him to counter the determination and good disposition of the Argentine Thomas Etcheverrywhich was delivered in two hours and 40 minutes before falling 6-7(3), 6-4 and 6-2.

The Italian, who lost the China Open final to Carlos Alcaraz on Wednesday, did not reach the level of his best matches, but his failures throughout the match gave way to a final stretch in which he wore down his world number one suit finished with enough.

In the first part The sinner failed to take advantage of the two set points and in the tiebreaker he was quite conservative, not enough to overcome Etcheverry, who was confident and knew how to pick the right shot at all times.

The Argentine, 37th in the ATP and still without titles in his history – he played three finals between 2023 and 2024 -, only played in the previous round the longest match in the history of the tournament, three hours and 43 minutes against to the Dutchman.

The second set showed no theoretical difference between both rivals. Etcheverry immediately responded to a break from Sinner with a counterbreakwhich forced the number one to grab serve again from his rival to get the sleeve back on track.

The first game of the third set was crazy, with 0-40 for Sinner, three break points wasted by the Italian and finally game for the Argentine.

Sinner then came out with three straight games, which could have been four if he had taken advantage of one of his two break points for 4-1, but it was 5-2 when he dealt the final blow to the Argentine, before confirming a blank in his take out.

Sinner’s next rival will be the one who wins the clash between the Spaniards Roberto Carballes and the American Ben Shelton.
