The Russian Daniel Medvedevnumber 5 in world tennis, achieved victory this Wednesday against the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas and will be measured in quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters 1,000 in Italian Jannik Sinner, the best tennis player at the moment. The duel lasted one hour and 51 minutes, divided into two sets, with a final result of 7-6(3) and 6-3.
The Russian’s greater dominance in the second set was a surprise as, at the end of the first, he sought the help of a physio due to discomfort in his right shoulder and also had to overcome a break of serve by Tsitsipas.
After the incident between American Frances Tiafoe and the referee the previous day, the Greek also had an unfriendly exchange with the chair manager following a warning for time loss, although not to the American’s extreme: “Why “You are against me? (…) You have no idea about tennis.”
Today’s result brings Medvedev’s history of victories against Tsitsipas to 10, with 4 matches falling on the side of the Hellenic tennis player, ranked 12th in the ATP table.
The Russian debuted with a victory over Japanese Thiago Seyboth Wild (7-5, 7-5) and had to come back to beat Italian Matteo Arnaldi (5-7, 6-4, 6-4).
At the moment, Medvedev maintains a favorable balance against Sinnner (7 wins to the Italian’s 6), and is one of the four tennis players who managed to defeat the world number one this year, who, however, won the last match two in the quarterfinals of the US Open.
