As MotorSport points out, the MotoGP World Championship has decided to pause engine development for the next two seasons, ahead of the implementation of new regulations that will come into force in 2027.
In this way, manufacturers can concentrate on adapting motorcycles to the new regulations, without having to make investments in engines, except for the updates that will be implemented next season.
For context, under the current regulations, constructors can, each season, present completely new and different machines before the first grand prix of each season, which are sealed and cannot be changed for the rest of the season. of the year.
On the other hand, with the engine freeze agreed by all manufacturers, the engine each team will display on Thursday at the 2025 Thai GP, the first event on next year’s calendar, will be the same one they will use throughout the season. Each team can have up to eight units throughout the year.
The FIM (International Motorcycle Federation) confirmed and clarified that changes can be made to the power units for reasons of safety or reliability, something that has already happened: “Engine specification in the MotoGP class will be frozen for 2026, forcing all manufacturers to use their 2025 specification next season.”
The aim is to control costs and ensure a level playing field before the implementation of the new regulation in 2027. Some allowances will be allowed for repairs related to safety or reliability, as well as those case of unavailability of parts, provided that they are not an increase in performance occurs.
