Joel Matip has retired

Joel Matip he is retiring. After continuous and serious injuries, the former Cameroonian defender of Liverpool33, has confirmed his retirement from football after leaving the red club last summer, where he was for eight seasons. Signed on a free transfer from Schalke 04 in 2016, Matip has been a key figure in Jürgen Klopp’s time as coach.

After a long-term injury cut short his 2020-21 campaign, the former Cameroonian international returned to great form but again a brutal ACL injury sustained in December prevented him from playing again. Matip and the fans at Anfield said goodbye on the final day of last season, before his contract expired.

He confirmed today that his playing career is over. He previously spent seven years representing Schalke at senior level after progressing through the youth ranks, winning the German Cup with the club in 2011. As an international, Matip made 27 appearances and scored one goal. for Cameroon, where he played in the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.
