Ruth Chepngetich broke the marathon world record (2h09’57)

Date:

Ruth Cepngetich She broke the marathon world record in Chicago and raised the limits for women at this distance one step further by becoming the first to break the 2:10 barrier with 2:09:57.

John Korir controlled the race until kilometer 30 without getting too tired, sheltering from the strong wind that shook the city of skyscrapers. Leading the way was a large group of seven runners who set a pace time of 1h28’18, on pace to finish in 2h03. Passing km 35, Korir continued his cruising as if nothing had happened, but the rest of his rivals were giving up time every meter, blaming the effort on high speed. The Kenyan broke away alone, more than half a minute behind his pursuers, maintaining a high stride rate as his heels rose on his buttocks and turned the trial into a time trial. Korir crossed the finish line in 2h02’43.

Last year in Chicago, the men’s world record was achieved by the much-missed Kelvin Kiptum in 2h00’35, a huge time that heralded a new era of dominance for the then 23-year-old Kenyan. He was set to be the first official to go under two hours in a marathon, but unfortunately he died in February of this year in a tragic traffic accident in Kaptagat (Kenya). The organization of the Chicago Marathon paid a huge tribute to him with a minute of silence before the start and with thousands of photos to remember the figure of Kiptum.
