Belt already in handl WBC, IBF and WBOthe boxer of Chechen origin Artur Beterbiev, 39 years old, took the WBA title from Bivol, 33 years old, until then undefeated (now 23 wins with one loss). This is the first time that Beterviev (21 wins, 20 of them by KO) failed to win before the limit: the judges ruled a majority decision in his favor (116-112, 115-113 and 114-114).
This is also the first time that a boxer has held four major world belts in this category.
The promoter of Bivol, the British Eddie Hearnprotested the judges’ verdict, specifically criticizing the one that awarded the result 116-112 in favor of Beterviev. “It’s a joke. It’s disgusting that after a lifetime of hard work, Dmitry Bivol is not an undisputed champion,” he said.
A rematch between the two could take place in 2025 although this fight, originally scheduled for June, was postponed due to a knee injury for Beterviev.
