The president of Major League Soccer, Don Garberacknowledges concern about the expansion of FIFA Club World Cup in 32 teams, held in USA next year, after the supreme leader of LaLiga, Javier Tebasasked to suppress the contest.
The new tournament of world football’s governing body, in which 12 European clubs will participate, will be played after a season in which the UEFA Champions League will be expanded and before the expanded 48-team World Cup to be held in 2026 in United States, Canada and Mexico.
Players have criticized the increasingly tight schedule, with some talking about a strike. This week, the European leagues, the players’ union FIFPRO Europe and LaLiga filed a joint complaint with EU antitrust regulators against FIFA’s international match calendar.
Thebes announced this week in Brussels that the new FIFA Club World Cup, which does not yet have sponsorship or broadcasting agreements, must be cancelled.
“We all need to be aware of the calendar, and I understand the opinion of XavierGarber told reporters at The Summit, part of London Leaders Week.
“I think we all need to work to see if we can be a more engaged part of the decision-making process, and I would include that in the Club World Cup. We, as a league, are aware like everyone else in toll that the various competitions in which they have to compete are for our players,” he said.
The 2025 Club World Cupwhich will be played from June 15 to July 13, coincides with the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which will be held on the west coast of the United States and Canada. The MLS season will resume later, as will the European leagues.
Garber warned that there may be a risk of oversaturation in football, but the recent lawsuit in Europe This could indeed be a path towards a more satisfactory global calendar and greater cooperation between governing bodies and leagues.
“I read about the lawsuits the other day, but sometimes it takes a little disruption to get everyone around the same table and make the right decisions,” he said.
“I would hope that you would make those correct decisions, because you are based those decisions on data and facts and research and strategy, but if not, sometimes you have to force yourself to make those decisions,” he added.
