The American Tommy Paulworld number 13, ended the Swiss’ good streak Stan Wawrinka39, lost on Saturday 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals of the ATP 250 tournament in Stockholm.
Wawrinka, former world number 3 and now 217, reached the semifinals by defeating the Russian Andrey Rublev (7th) on Friday. His first hit against a Top 10 member in over a year.
This qualification, at the age of 39, made the three-time Grand Slam winner the third-oldest semi-finalist in an ATP tournament since 1990.
But his adventure ended against Tommy Paul, winner of Stockholm in 2021. Broken and led by the 27-year-old American in the first round, 4-2, Wawrinka had two chances to break, but it was not finished .
In the second set, the American took serve from the Swiss from the start to go it alone and finish 6-2.
Paul will face the winner of the Bulgarian vs Bulgarian match in Sunday’s final Grigor Dimitrov (10th) and the Dutch Tallon Griekspoor (37th) scheduled for the afternoon.
