Frank Kirby admitted to being relieved after being selected in the group England Facing the Women’s European Championship after losing a large part of Chelsea’s league -winning campaign due to “fatigue”.
In April, Chelsea manager Emma Hayes said the 28-year-old striker, who had successfully recovered from a heart condition called pericarditis in 2020, would not be available for his club or national team in uncertain time.
However, Kirby was included in England coach Sarina Wiegman’s 23-player squad for the European Championship earlier this month, and made his first appearance since February in a friendly against Belgium last week.
“I wouldn’t say there was fear, but the pick was definitely relaxed,” Kirby told reporters Wednesday. “Back at Chelsea to train, I talked to Emma and I just said, ‘Look, what’s going to happen, if I’m ready, I’m ready. If I run and I’m not selected, then at least I know I’ve done. I have it all. ‘”
Two-time European Championship runners-up England will begin their campaign against Austria at Old Trafford on July 6 before taking on Norway and Northern Ireland.
