Borussia Dortmund ended its miserable week in Wolfsburg with elimination in the second round of the German Cup, after defeats suffered against Real Madrid, in the Champions League, and against Augsburg, in the Bundesliga.
Equality was the dominant tone in the first half. Borussers forward Max Beier could have put his team ahead in the 14th minute, when a deep pass left him alone with goalkeeper Grabara, but his shot hit the post.
Guittens, who came to the second line, and Guirassy, with a header released in the goalmouth, also managed to put Sahin’s team ahead, but they did not find the goal. Wolfsburg did not want to lose and there were also dangerous actions that tested goalkeeper Kobel, although the scoreboard did not move at the end of the first 45 minutes.
The second act reproduces the same terms. Dortmund were still unable to complete their offensives, with Guirassy’s missed chances even more evident that the match did not take place; while the Volkswagen team chose to stop its rival in a more difficult pace of play through several fouls, responded with the same brutality as Borussia, and in the final phase it launched a final wave to find of classification.
The locals had it in their power to close the classification before the end of regulation time, but their shots collided with Kobel or narrowly missed the goal and the duel went to extra time.
As extra time began, a pass into the center of the area from Özcan was headed home by Tiago Tomas, but he found the crossbar as the Volkswagen Arena sang for his team. Each team then protested for a penalty in their favor, one for a knockdown and another for a handball inside the area, but none of them were signaled by the referee.
Minutes passed without any more dangerous actions, although there was some offensive effort on the part of the European runners-up, and when the duel appeared to be resolved from the fatal point, a ball hanging in the area ended with a pinpoint shot by Dane Jonas Wind just beyond the reach of the Swiss goalkeeper and which sent Sahin’s team out of the competition in a season that has, so far, been one of shipwreck.
