Aston Villa’s curse in this competition continues and has now gone nine consecutive domestic tournaments without reaching at least the quarterfinals of the English Football League Cup, after losing this Wednesday against Crystal Palace (1-2).
Oliver Glasner’s men, who had just won their first Premier League last weekend by beating Tottenham Hotspur, took advantage of the inertia to kick the Birmingham side out of the League Cup.
Eberechi Eze, with a good header from the center of Daniel Muñoz, and Daichi Kamada, after a bad clearance by Diego Carlos, made useless the goal of Jhon Durán, who this time was a starter and added his eighth goal of the season.
With this elimination, Villa have not gone beyond the round of 16 in a domestic cup tournament since 2019-2020. Their last good result in a cup, if we ignore the Conference League semi-finals achieved last year, was the League Cup final in 2020 where they lost to Manchester City.
In the FA Cup, results were even worse and they have not reached the quarterfinals since 2015, when they were finalists.
Palace will enter the quarter-finals of this competition for the first time since 2012.
