An injury-riddled Girona comfortably beat Extremadura

Date:

He Girona was able to advance to the round at a high price, as has been the case in recent games. The Catalans defeated Extremadura in a match that caused little difficulty for the men of Michael Sanchez, that they could barely field eleven available players in the first team. Bryan Gil, Miovski and Arnau brought joy to the guests.

The Extremadura team did not start badly, as they tried to check their opponent head on throughout the match, which saw stretches of equality, despite Girona’s clear dominance in terms of possession.

Seven minutes into the match, however, Danjuma went to ground to confirm the umpteenth injury for the visitors, who were still mired in a messy casualty situation. The ‘bad luck’ discourse is starting to wear thin on Montilivi and it gives the impression that something is not being done right within loads of players.

However, Van de Beek entered the field of play as his compatriot left on a stretcher, without even being able to get off his own feet, something that greatly worried Gironí fans. Fortunately, for the favorites in the event, Bryan Gil returned, who after twelve minutes decided to penetrate the net defended by Carlos Rodríguez. The winger, key from the right wing, scored a beautiful low shot from the edge of the area and was one of the standouts for his insistence on advancing towards the opposition goal.

The locals, with hope in hand and a stadium that showed a good entrance to Almendralejo, tried to take advantage of the counterattacks that presented themselves, managing to cause a little panic in the first half. A play down the left wing and a direct free kick by Juanmi Callejón were the highlights for Cidoncha’s men, but no luck. On the other hand, Girona also missed some clear chances, leaving Miovski or Misehouy as the protagonists.

The second half was calmer for the ‘blanc-i-vermells’. Míchel, seeking to avoid injuries and manage the load, made three more changes. The fifth and last came a little later, with the curiosity that a young player came in for another so that Girona would not fall into an incorrect alignment; He had to keep seven players from the first team in the green as dictated by the cup tournament standard.

Having at times exceeded 80%, the visitors began to gain ground on their rival, who began to notice the fatigue in their legs due to the demands of the match. That’s when Miovski’s double came, as he had to wait for the Cup to make his debut as a scorer with the elastic ‘gironina’. The Macedonian finished off a lateral free kick taken by Miguel (58′) and, four minutes later, he took advantage of an aerial ball from Papa to finish easily inside the area (62′).

If Extremadura had difficulty overcoming the opponent, it was even more difficult when Marco was injured who also felt a hole in his career. The team ran out of changes minutes before, having to finish the match with fewer players. Seconds later, Girona capitalized on Arnau’s low shot from the edge of the area that went in after a defender (76′).

Minutes from the end, with the match completely decided, the Extremadurans asked Leandro for a penalty after Juanpe fell, although Munuera Montero clearly saw it. Meanwhile, Míchel’s men took the opportunity to continue to rest with the ball and kept coming, missing clear chances that prevented them from increasing the score further.

After regulation time had passed, with no added time, Girona left with the first round of the Cup under their belt against an Extremadura team that gave it their all for ninety minutes. The Catalans, now, will once again focus on the next match in LaLiga, against Leganés.
