Olympic champion Tamirat Tola will be looking for the double in New York

Date:

The two current champions of New York Marathon, Tamirat Tola and Hellen Obiriwill once again top this edition’s elite starting list Sunday (3:15 pm Teledeporte, Esport3)which will feature marathoners competing at the Paris 2024 Games in August, but there are no Spaniards among the favorites. Exactly, the Ethiopian Silly (33 years old) is the winner of Olympic gold with a huge record of 2h06’26 on a circuit with many unevens. A difficult route as in the Big Apple race, where he achieved victory in 2023 with a new circuit record of 2:04’58, a time believed to be unattainable in this event. If he manages to repeat the success, it will be the first to make a double New York – Olympic Games in the same season.

“I’m so happy I can defend my title in New York after my great performance at the Games, “said Tola, who will not be easy to repeat his success. Along with him will also be the champion of New York in recent years, Evans Chebet (2022), Abel Korir (2019) and Geoffrey Kamworor (2017).

“I came with confidence. Mentally, I feel very good and I think I can win,” added Tola, assuring that his main goal in 2025 is to attack the world record of Kelvin Kiptum have 2h00’35 and want to do it Berlin -giving up the Tokyo 2025 World Cup-.

In the women’s section, Hellen Obiri will not compete for the world record, but will compete to repeat the victory in New York. On his record he has three Olympic medals – bronze at Paris 2024 – and seven world medals and, at the age of 34, he wants to add a new achievement to his record, to become the first to win the marathons of Boston and New York in the same year.

“There’s no place like New York and I’m ready to defend my title,” Obiri said. Her great rival is 2022 winner Sharon Lokeidi, who finished fourth at the Paris 2024 Games and wants to reign again in the world’s most media event.

Along with them there will also be legends like Edna Kiplagat -winner in New York in 2010- and Vivian Cheruiyotfour-time Olympic medalist. The Ethiopian great will also make its premiere in New York Tirunesh Dibabatriple Olympic champion and 16-time world champion.

The New York Marathon will be seen live in 530 million homes in 200 countries, unprecedented coverage. The broadcast will follow everything that happens in the men’s, women’s and wheelchair races with a device of 40 cameras on ground vehicles and also in helicopters. In Spain, it can be followed live on Teledeporte and Esport3 from 3:15 pm
