Biniam Girmay won the criterium held in the Japanese city of Saitamabilled as ‘the 22nd stage of the Tour de France’, after winning the sprint ahead of the Slovenian Primoz Roglic, champion of La Vuelta, and the British Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan).
The Eritrean cyclist (Intermarché-Wanty) thus became the fastest in the rain after a race with movement where Roglic (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), finally second, looked for it by fighting until the last two kilometers as just one of a breakaway that also included local Yukiya Arashiro (Bahrain Victorious) and Frenchman Romain Bardet (dsm-firmenich PostNL).
The latter also won the prize on the mountain, while the British Chris Froome and the Belgian Jasper Philipsen (TDF Legends) got recognition for the combativeness and the classification of points respectively.
