Terres de l’Ebre will play a leading role in the next Volta a Catalunya

Date:

The Volta Ciclista a Catalunya will have a stage that will take place entirely in the regions of the ‘Terres de l’Ebre’, on the route of its 104th edition. The municipality of Paüls, located in the middle of the Els Ports Natural Park, will be the start of one of the stages that will take place between March 24 and 30, and will end in the town of Amposta, one of the most iconic places of the ‘Delta de l’Ebre’.

On the other hand, Volta has collaborated with the Tourist Board of the Provincial Council of Tarragona with the desire to organize a stage in the Costa Daurada covering both the inland and coastal territories, in the 2026 edition.

On this occasion, the 4 regions that make up the Terres de l’Ebre: Baix Ebre, Montsià, Terra Alta and Ribera d’Ebre will be the scene of one of the Volta 2025 stages. Paüls (Baix Ebre) will host for the first time the start of the test while the capital of Montsià, Amposta, will be the final point of the stage.

With just over 550 inhabitants, this municipality is located on a hill, at the foot of the castle. The term Paüls is defined as an amphitheater surrounded by mountains. The streets are staggered, narrow and steep due to the uneven terrain. The municipality has a typical mountainous terrain (in fact, it is the only high mountain town in the region), and represents one of the gateways to the Els Ports Natural Park.

In an area that includes more than 35,000 hectares of Catalan territory, it is a limestone, steep and abrupt massif that presents itself as a wild natural space, with leafy forests and many routes for hiking. The highest peak of the Els Ports Massif is Caro, with an altitude of 1,441 meters that allows us to enjoy the amazing views of the Park and the Ebre Delta, and which has been the scene of the 4 arrivals of the Volta, the last of them in 2023 with the victory of the Slovenian Primoz Roglic.

For its part, Amposta will host a Volta stage for the 17th time in its history. Up to nine times it has been the starting point of one of the stages, two of them being great test starting points. The first of them was built in 1926 while the last time it was there was in 1983, in a stage starting from Salou and arriving in the capital of Montsià won by the Belgian cyclist Frank Hoste, a rider with several victories in both the Tour de France as in the Giro d’Italia. Other winners are the Italian Cipriano Chemello (1969), the Navarrese Jesús Loroño (1951) or the Frenchman Simon Tequi (1926), among others.

In this way, the Volta stage in Terres de l’Ebre will connect Els Ports Natural Park and Delta de l’Ebre Natural Park in a route that promises to be spectacular and will pass through four regions of the territory.
