Pecco Bagnaia fulfilled what he promised at the beginning, to extend as long as possible the proclamation of Jorge Martín as MotoGP world champion. In the Sprint race, the Italian Ducati Lenovo rider went out and finished the race with hopes of first place for Sunday’s race.
The Italian achieved a higher speed than his pursuers and, on the last lap, with first place already in his pocket, his compatriot and team-mate Enea Bastianini was able to give some air to Bagnaia, who was overtaken Martín in second position. A clean Saturday for Ducati Lenovo with one last big round remaining to decide the World Championship champion.
“Honestly, I did not expect Enea, because I made the best start in the history of Ducati, but everything was perfect, I took the lead and I knew that my speed would guarantee me a good difference,” acknowledged Pecco on DAZN.
Although Bagnaia has little chance of taking the championship from Martín, as 19 points separate the two drivers, the transalpine rider made it clear that they will be out of Sunday’s race:
“I achieved it and I’m happy about it. It’s still 19 points and it hurts me because of what happened in Malaysia, but in the end this is it. We’ll try everything to win tomorrow and try to do our best,” declared Bagnaia. who was surprised by his decision to come out with a hard tire without even testing it. “Since we have to risk, we risk. It went well, I expected something different, you have to be more careful but it went well,” he said.
Finally, the Italian joked about what strategy he will follow in Sunday’s race.
“I can’t do anything, I would have liked to put 14 drivers in the middle, but it’s not possible. (…) What has to happen, will happen. Jorge did the right thing, he deserved it,” Bagnaia admitted about Martín.
