One of the direct consequences of the election of Jon Uriarte as president of Athletic was the inclusion of Ernesto Valverde as coach of the rojiblanco first team. That’s why Txingurri started his third season on the bench of the Bilbao club. The Gasteiz coach appears in the rojiblanca entity’s historic centennial rankings as the manager who directed the most official matches: a total of 307 distributed between the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons and eventually between 2013 -14 and 2016-17, both included.
Valverde, who finished his previous stint at San Mamés to coach Barça, has returned to activity after being dismissed, oddly enough, as coach of the Barça team. Txingurri led Messi and company in the 2017-18, 2018-19 season, winning the League and Cup in the first and the League in the second and surprisingly being eliminated from both Champions League, and being dismissed in mid-2019-2020. The Gasteiz coach has not returned to training since.
Bielsa, Iraia and Sergio Navarro
Uriarte’s win in the polls is frustrating what Bielsa’s return to Athletic will be like, as the Argentine coach was chosen by candidate Arechabaleta. The new president has come to the Ibaigane seat without a general director of football since he was unable to be with Mexican Carlos Aviña shortly after his signing became official due to some old tweets with racist, homophobic and xenophobic overtones.
Iraia Iturregi will be re -appointed as women’s Athletic coach, Sergio Navarro will be Lezama’s director, Xabi Arrieta will be women’s football technical manager and a performance director and another in sports development and transfer remains to be determined.
