Concacaf on Monday authorized the Honduras Football Federation (FFH) with a veto of a match without an audience in the next home match due to the attack suffered by the technical director of the Mexican team after the first leg of the quarterfinals of the Nations League in which Mexico lost 2-0.
After the end of the match on Friday at the Francisco Morazán stadium in San Pedro Sula, a fan threw an object that hit the head of Javier Aguirre, who will come to say goodbye to Honduras coach Reinaldo Rueda. The blow caused the Mexican strategist’s head to bleed.
“The Concacaf Disciplinary Committee sanctioned the Honduras Football Federation for not implementing adequate security measures during the Nations League quarterfinal match against Mexico,” reported the body that governs football in North and Central America and the Caribbean.
“After considering the documentation and evidence collected during its investigation and based on competition regulations and the applicable Disciplinary Code, the Committee decided that the Honduras Football Federation should play in the next match of the national team of its men at home (of a Concacaf competition) behind closed doors,” he said.
In addition to the match penalty, Concacaf imposed a financial penalty on FFH and warned it that more severe penalties could be applied if similar incidents occurred in future matches.
The body also confirmed that the Disciplinary Committee has opened a separate case to investigate what Aguirre did in the fight.
FFH said in a statement that the Mexican strategist provoked Honduran fans with provocative words, gestures and behavior during the match.
The return match for the quarterfinals of the Nations League will be played on Tuesday at the Nemesio Diez stadium in Toluca, in central Mexico.
The winners of the quarterfinals will qualify directly for the Gold Cup to be played between June 14 and July 6, 2025.
The semifinals of the Nations League will be played on March 20 and three days later the third place and final will be played at the SoFi Stadium in California.
