Michele Kang’s latest ‘madness’ in women’s football

Date:

The owner of the Washington Spirit, Michele Kangis committed to providing $30 million to United States Federation over the next five years for programs targeting women and girls. The donation announced Tuesday by US Soccer, a nonprofit organization, represents the largest single investment specifically for women’s and women’s programs in the federation’s history.

Kang also owns women’s teams Olympique Lyonnais from France and London City Lionesses from England. Business woman leads the way Kynisca Sports Internationala global multi-team sports organization dominated by women. He also founded Cognosante, a medical technology company, and Cognosante Ventures, a venture capital firm.

The donation to US Soccer will go toward programs that identify talent, expand competitive opportunities for girls and provide professional development for players, coaches and referees. This will allow the federation to double the number of national team camps it organizes.

“Women’s sports have been undervalued and ignored for a long time,” Kang said in a statement. “I am committed to raising the level of excellence in women’s football, on and off the field, by providing athletes with the resources they need to reach their full potential and surrounding them with the professional support they deserve .I hope this investment serves as ‘seed capital’ and will encourage other donors to follow your example.

Investments in women’s sports are nothing new for Kang, who donated $50 million in July to women’s sports health initiatives, and later donated $4 million to the rugby sevens program women in the United States following the Paris Games, while creating her own non-profit organization dedicated to sports science.
