It’s been a few years increasingly common that some riders who are part of the World Tour peloton, combine road cycling with other disciplines such as cyclocross, track and mountain biking (MTB), and others.
In these specialties, during the season, runners add points according to the successes they have achieved and also the other results achieved in the various trials they are fighting. These points, however, are only valid for the classification of discipline to which they are added.
Now this system I can count my days, as the sports director of the International Cycling Union, Peter Van den Abeele, said in Sporza. And the organization considers the possibility of change the point sum mode which is currently established.
As he explained, the goal is to ensure both the cyclists and the teams to which they belong any other way to get these points which is essential to stay in the highest category of professional cycling and not be relegated.
“That’s what we’re looking for points from other disciplines are included for the classification of the team that determines the licenses of the World Tour,” said Van den Abeele. In other words, the UCI is working on the option achieved by points in the road modality those from other specialties may be added in which the runner participates, whatever it is.
For Van den Abeele this new change means a lot “offers added value to the team” and will show “that we will support them” if they let their cyclists “compete in other disciplines”. Names like Mathieu van der Poel, Wout van Aert and Tom Pidcock will benefit combine road with cyclocross. Another case is that of Filippo Ganna who is in the same situation, but in his case at track as a complementary discipline.
This change, which is quite revolutionary because will change the way it works of cycling as we know it today, is to be expected “at the earliest from 2026“, like Van de Abeele points out, because it will be when the “new World Tour cycle” begins..
