“Marbella’s DNA is to be ambitious and we want to continue dreaming of the Cup”

Marcos Olguín (Madrid, 2001) is one of the few natives of Madrid that Marbella FC has in its squad. Despite this, he was a youth player for Villarreal, where he arrived when he was 12 years old and where he left as Juvenil captain to start a career in professional football that led him to wear shirts of Burgos, Mirandés or Logroñés subsidiaries before arriving in 2023 in Marbella. For the match against Atlético de Madrid, he dreamed of causing a surprise, asking De Paul for the shirt and talking to Riquelme, with whom he trained in Anduva.

How have these weeks been since finding out you will be playing against Atlético de Madrid?

Above all, we live it with great hope and with great enthusiasm, because in the end we will face the leader of LaLiga with an impressive streak of 12 consecutive victories. This is a game we are very excited about.

And what do people say to you on the street?

This was discussed many weeks ago. Coming out of the draw, even though we have the League, people have high expectations for this match because I don’t know how it happens every day. People encourage you a lot when we walk down the street, I will highlight that above all, their encouragement.

And in the locker room, what are the feelings there?

We are ambitious, Marbella’s DNA has always been ambitious and good, we have achieved it and we want to keep dreaming. Let’s go out and compete and see what happens. Our goal is to pass and make it as difficult as possible for Atlético de Madrid. Above all, enjoy.

A few weeks ago you were playing in Cerro del Espino against Atlético B and now you are facing the first team in the Cup, who will tell you?

In the end, life is like that. Every now and then you are surprised. Recently we were playing against Atlético de Madrid B and after a few weeks, well, we will be playing against the first team. This is a prize for all of us, we will try to enjoy it.

You are 23 years old and should be one of the youngest in a team where there is a veteran like Callejón. What advice does he give you for this match?

There are people younger than me, although I am one of the youngsters in the squad. We have an international reference like José Callejón who is another one within the group. He’s always giving us advice, helping us in any way he can and I think he’s given us a lot this year. We should thank him. There are more people who have played in the elite, as in the case of Bernardo, who played for Girona in the First Division. As with Callejón, he helps us as much as he can, and contributes his experience. We have no choice but to enjoy and learn a lot from them.

Did Callejón give you any special advice for this fight?

He doesn’t stress too much. During the week, he tells us to have fun, and above all not to leave anything behind, because football is almost over. And in the end these are the moments you miss, in the end you have to appreciate what is happening to you, which is the hard part, and try to enjoy them.

You were talking about Bernardo, Bernardo was at Girona who knocked Atlético out of the Cup.

I have no idea, but almost everything he tells us is the same as Callejón. He told us that this is a very important game for us and that above all we should enjoy it.

What catches your attention the most about this Atlético de Madrid?

They are clearly on the verge of matching the best streak in history. They are leaders of LaLiga, they have one of the best squads internationally. So it’s time to enjoy it in a big field like La Rosaleda, which we can fill.

Against Marbella they can equal the best winning streak in their history. Is this an extra motivation for you to break their stats?

In the end it’s extra motivation for us. But the data is there. They went from being one of the best Atlético de Madrid in history, in terms of victories. We have an incentive to break that streak as much as we can.

You are a defender who can play as a center back and as a winger on both sides, so on Saturday you will have to face the Atlético de Madrid forwards. Which forward stands out the most?

Griezmann without a doubt. They are all World Top. In reality, this happens as much at the top as at any position on the field that everyone is a Leader. But come on, highlight both Griezmann and Sorloth, Correa, Julián, anyone can tell you. But if I had to highlight one above the rest, Griezmann is a norm.

In the locker room did you talk about who you were going to order shirts from?

Not yet, we don’t know how to do it. At the end of the game there will be times to ask for a shirt, but hey, today we’re talking more about the game than asking for a shirt.

In your case, which player would you like to ask for the shirt?

I think I will ask De Paul. I really like the way he plays, his commitment to the team, his energy. He is a recent world champion, so big words.

Do you know anyone in the first team?

I met Roro Riquelme when I was in Mirandés. At that stage I was between the reserve team and the first team, they promoted me from time to time. I agreed with him, and what I have with him is very good, he is a very good companion, he always helps us in any way he can, and I thank him for that.

Have you contacted him?

Not yet, not yet. I’ll write to him one of these days, and I hope to have time to talk before or after the game.

What does Marbella look like as a team?

The word team is one of our strong points, because we have a squad where there are no starters or substitutes. Otherwise, anyone who has a chance to play or perform is always available, and we always perform well, no matter who’s playing. So that defines us. Remember that most players can play in different positions and it makes everything easier.
