This Wednesday, the London Prosecutor’s Office charged the United Kingdom Athletics Federation and its former sports director with crime of involuntary manslaughter for the death of Abdullah Hayayei, a Paralympic athlete who lost his life in 2017 after a metal cage fell on him while he was training.
“After reviewing the evidence provided by the Metropolitan Police Service, the Crown Prosecution Service has authorized criminal charges to be brought against UK Athletics and a 77-year-old man,” the Crown Prosecution Service said in a statement, referring to Keith Davies, who was also charged with the crime of homicide due to gross negligence.
Events took place on July 11, 2017, when the F34 class Paralympic thrower received a severe blow to the head when the hammer cage collapsed during training, an unfortunate incident that caused his death on the spot.
Hayayei, from the United Arab Emirates, is in London preparing for the Paralympic world championships to be held in the city at the end of the same week.
