Spanish Athletics, with nine Olympic finalists at the World Championships in Eugene

Date:

The selected team, consisting of 55 athletes, although without Ana Peleteiro or Orlando Ortega, is the fourth largest in history, to participate in the championships starting July 15 in Oregon

Spain will be represented at the Eugene World Championships in Oregon, United States, which kicks off on July 15, by 55 athletes, including nine finalists at last year’s Tokyo Olympics. Eusebio Cáceres (fourth in length), Álvaro Martín and María Pérez (fourth in 20km run), Marc Tur (fourth in 50km run), AdiánBen (fifth in 800m), Adel Mechaal (fifth in 1,500m), Diego García (sixth in 20 km run), Asier Martínez (sixth in 110 m hurdles) and Mohamed Katir (eight out of 5,000) are the Spanish athletes who have qualified among the top eight at the Games. The only medalist in Tokyo 2020, Ana Peleteiro, bronze in height, will not participate in the first Outdoor World Championships to be held in the United States because she is pregnant, nor will hurdler Orlando Ortega.

The selected list made public on Thursday by the Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA) includes the names of middle-distance runner Mariano García, world champion in the 800-meter indoor track; Adel Mechaal, who will double and run not only the 1,500, but also the 5,000 meters; Sara Gallego, recent champion of Spain in the 400m hurdles, including national record, who will compete in three events; and the marching team, which includes María Pérez, Diego García, Álvaro Martín, Marc Tur and Miguel Ángel López.

Of the 55 Spanish athletes, 33 are men and 22 women, having met the criteria set by the coach, José Peiró, and the sports directorate of the RFEA. This is the fourth largest Spanish delegation in history for a World Cup, after Sevilla-99 (78 athletes), Tokyo-91 (58) and London 2017 (56). The Hayward Field stadium at the University of Oregon, with a capacity of 30,000 spectators, will become the epicenter of world athletics in the second half of July, between July 15 and 24.
