American defense Naomi Girma will undergo a medical examination with the Chelsea this week after agreeing to personal terms that came from San Diego waves (NWSL) for a world record amount. According to ‘The Guardian’, the London club will pay 890,000 pounds (1,053,000 million euros), the highest figure for a transfer in women’s football.
The figure far surpasses the record of around €800,000 paid by American club Bay FC to sign Zambian striker Racheal Kudananji from Madrid CFF in February 2024. It is also more than double the record for a signing made of an English women’s club, Chelsea paid for Colombian forward Mayra Ramírez in January. It is estimated at 500,000 euros.
Girma, a 24-year-old central defender, is also a target for Olympique Lyon, who reportedly made a similar offer, but Chelsea are understood to be his preferred destination. There she will join fellow American internationals Catarina Macario and Mia Fishel. Girma has been with the San Diego Wave since 2022 and is under contract with the NWSL team until 2026.
