Denis Shapovalov, a semifinalist last year, was surprised by American Brandon Nakashima (6-2, 4-6, 6-1 and 7-6 (6) and will rival Colombian Daniel Galán in the third round of Wimbledon.
The Canadian, who arrived in London in free fall after losing six consecutive games since the Masters 1,000 in Rome, has already suffered in the first round, where he had to go five sets. He confirmed his poor form when he fell against a Nakashima who, based on not making involuntary mistakes (14), has separated from one of the semifinalists since last year.
Shapovalov, seeded 14 in the tournament, was another significant casualty in the lower part of the draw, where Marin Cilic, Matteo Berrettini, Diego Schwartzman and Felix Auger-Aliassime fell.
Nakashima will be Galán’s rival in the third round, after the Colombian passed the round on Thursday due to a loss due to Spanish covid Roberto Bautista.
