Iga Swiatek suffered to extend to 37 consecutive wins

Date:

Polish Iga Swiatek suffered hard to top the game-winning streak to 37 by defeating Dutch Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove 6-4, 4-6 and 6-3.

The world number one gave up his first set of the tournament and struggled in the early stages of the third set, against a player who entered the final draw as the ‘lucky loser’.

Pattinama Kerkhove, number 138 in the world, rocked the Pole game, was very serious and focused aware of the danger he was involved in, and forced him into the first third set he had to play since the round of 16 at Roland Garros. Swiatek’s 31 unforced errors were her biggest burden, against a Dutchwoman who lacked the power to get more ‘winners’ to equalize in the fight.

With consecutive number 37 wins, Swiatek equals the record of Martina Hings of Switzerland and she is already leading with 36 wins by Monica Seles. Ahead is the big challenge, 55 wins by Chris Evert, 57 by Margaret Court, 66 by Steffi Graf and 74 by Martina Navratilova.

To continue to extend the next consecutive round, Swiatek will face Alizé Cornet of France in the next round, beating American Claire Liu by a double 6-3. Cornet discovered the alleged covid outbreak at Roland Garros, although he later withdrew it and made sure they were just rumors. The Poles and the French never confronted.
