At least 25 people were killed as a ship who brought soccer players to the KWA River, to the province of IndomBe, in the middle-west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (RDC), as reported Monday by local authorities.
The sinking took place this Sunday night near the mushie territory, from which they returned aboard the village boat players of the village after a football match.
The ship left the mushie port at 23:00 on Sunday (22:00 gmt) and anxiety after twelve kilometers of navigation.
“The temporary report speaks of 25 dead and 30 survivors,” said Provincial Government spokesman Alexis Mputu, mentioned by local media.
“The first cause (from the accident) is night -night navigating,” Mputu said, adding that the ship was “unbalanced.”
The Mushie River police station confirmed the tragedy without providing any details, as well as the administration of that territory.
“Lots of deaths, but we didn’t know the exact number. We were blocked to get off the place. We should go there to ask about the situation. Unfortunately, we have no way to pay the fuel to get there,” he explained Renacle Kwatiba, mushie territorial overseer.
This is not the first to see that a shipwreck has been recorded in the province of Indombe.
In fact, on December 17 of at least 42 people, including children, died in the sinking of another medium due to the apparent excess in Lake Mai-IndomBe, in the homonymous province.
The ship accident is quite common in the RDC because rivers and lakes are used daily as a transportation route, in a country with minimal infrastructure and dense jungles.
Ships, often certain, usually travel very loaded and the signage is hardly uniform.
