Andrea Dovizioso will leave MotoGP at the end of the season

Date:

Andrea Dovizioso, 36, will leave MotoGP at the end of the year and will not be returning for the 2023 season because he no longer enjoys racing because he doesn’t feel competitive, according to his own admission.

Dovizioso, who started his career in 2001 and has been a three-time runner-up in MotoGP with Ducati (2017, 2018, 2019), has scored just 10 points this season and has never finished in the top 10 in any race so far: 22nd place overall.

Dovizioso left Ducati at the end of the 2020 season and had no team in 2021 until the second half of the season, when he was signed by Petronas Yamaha, which is now an independent Yamaha RNF team.

“Of course I’m not going to race, there’s no reason for that. I always say if I’m not competitive I don’t want to be here,” Dovizioso told MotoGP.com adding that he has struggled to adapt to the technical changes in his sport.

“I’m completely relaxed about it. I was already half a year out of racing last year. I’ve already tried it, so I’m fine with it. I didn’t want to end the season like this,” he said. the Italian.

Dovizioso told Reuters earlier this year that he was having a hard time getting good results but he didn’t touch the Yamaha bike, which is very different from the Ducati he rode for eight years.

Dovizioso added that only defending champion Fabio Quartararo is comfortable with Yamaha this year and if others don’t ride like him they will definitely have a problem.

Quartararo leads the standings this season, but Yamaha’s next best rider is his factory teammate Franco Morbidelli on 19th.

“If Fabio wins, there’s a reason. That means there’s a chance to be fast,” Dovizioso noted.

“But if other riders complain, like in the last few years, it means that there is no way to be as competitive as before. MotoGP has changed a lot. In the past, 10 years ago, the same riders were at the top, “Any bike. Now it’s different, the mechanical part is a bit more important”, concludes the Italian.
