The British Andy Murray, sixth seed, needs a strong comeback against unknown Australian Max Purcell (4-6, 6-2, 6-1) to survive the Newport tournament and reach the quarterfinals of grass-court competition.
The Scotsman pulled the faith to hold on the match against the player from Sydney, 202 in the ATP rankings this year did not win against the circuit until playing in Newport. It was his first round win against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino for the first time in 2022.
Purcell took advantage, winning the opening set and forcing the former world number one, a finalist this year in Sydney and Stuttgart, to extend the rivalry to stay in competition. The Australian gradually melted into the field and the British took advantage of it.
Murray won after two hours and twenty -three minutes and the pass to the semifinals will be played against Kazakh Alexander Bublikthird seed, knocking out American Jack Sock 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
