Colombian Daniel Elahi Galán stopped Italian Fabio Fognini’s comeback attempt on Monday and won in three sets (6-3, 5-7 and 6-3) to reach the second round of the Umag tournament in Croatia.
The player from Bucaramanga, 99 in the world, the transalpine winner of this tournament in 2016 and finalist in 2013, soon took advantage. Fognini reacted and leveled the match by scoring in the second set but Galán, wishing to improve on the quarterfinals achieved during the tournament in Córdoba (Argentina), so far his best role, he regained dominance by placing himself at a clear distance at the beginning of the last round.
Galán held the pulse until the end and closed the match after two hours and 45 minutes to face Italian Giulio Zeppieri, who came from earlier, winning a return against Argentine Pedro Cachín 3-6, 6 -1 and 6- 4 .
