Porto fulfilled the predictions and lifted the first title of the season after defeating CD Tondela (3-0) in the Portuguese Super Cup. The match, played at the Municipal de Aveiro, was sentenced to a break thanks to goals from the Iranian international Mehdi Taremi and the Brazilian Evanilson.
Last season’s League and Cup champions carried the weight of the match from the start. He trapped Tondela in his field, relegated to the Second Division, and sought to open the can by turning the game towards the flanks, especially on the right to exploit the pace of Joao Mario.
Sérgio Conceiçao’s men enjoyed their first clear chance in the 9th minute but the Senegalese Babacar Niasse avoided, in his face, the first goal from Evanilson, who was left alone in front of the goalkeeper after a great help from Taremi.
strategy objective
Moments later, Tondela threatened a long shot from Telmo Arcanjo (min. 11), in his only dangerous approach to the ‘dragoes’ area. Porto kept turning and his goal seemed to be an hour. It happened like that. Half an hour later, a tactical move erupted after a corner kick: Evanilson curled in at the near post and Taremi, unmarked, finished the second.
Tondela had not yet assimilated the blow when three minutes later Evanilson sentenced the clash after picking up the deflection of Taremi’s shot at the post, leaving two defenders before arming his leg.
Another Porto after the break
In the second half, Porto conceded more of the ball to their rivals but hardly suffered in defense and knew how to exploit the speed of their wingers to put together a quick attack.
However, the last goal came in the last straight after an individual action by Iranian Taremi, who left due to the strength of his scores and fired a powerful cross shot.
Porto won its 23rd Super Cup and continued to extend its record, while Sergio Conceiçao equaled Artur Jorge’s, albeit the only coach to win this title eight times.
Farewell Marchesin
Former Madrid player Pepe and Cantabrian central defender Ivan Marcano started for Porto and Murcian striker Toni Martínez came on at half-time for Evanilson. Meanwhile, Argentine goalkeeper Agustín Marchesín played his last game before joining Celta de Vigo.
