Former Formula 1 race director Michael Massey has publicly denounced that received death threats after last year’s controversy over the resolution of the Formula 1 World Championship, which was won by Max Verstappen.
The Australian changed the safety car reset procedure at the end of December’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, a move that benefited Verstappen and not a Lewis Hamilton seeking his eighth crown.
“There are black days,” Masi told ‘News Corp’ this Sunday. “I felt like the most hated person in the world. I received death threats. People said they would persecute me and my family,” he lamented.
Masi’s decision to allow lapped cars between leader Hamilton and Verstappen helped the Dutchman pass the English champion on the final lap and take the title. A subsequent report at the Abu Dhabi race in March concluded that Masi did a “human error” but acted in “good faith”.
Masi, who quit the FIA’s governing body in March, has come under fire on social media. “They were shocking,” Masi said of the messages he received on Facebook. “Racist, abusive, disgusting… They called me every possible way. On my Facebook, on my Linkedin…”he complained.
Since then, he returned to Australia and stayed away from Formula 1. “I don’t want to talk to anyone”, is counted. “Not even family and friends. I only talk to my close family, but very briefly,” he explained.
Masi explained how this situation affected him. “It has a physical impact, but it was mostly mental. I wanted to be in a bubble. I didn’t feel like talking to them. I wanted to be alone, which was a big challenge,” he explained. “The whole experience made me a stronger person”has closed.
