With the base of the team that won last season’s Europa League with the addition of Mario Götze, Eintracht Frankfurt, Real Madrid’s rivals in the European Super Cup, went through the first round of the DFB Pokal with flying colors after defeating 0-4 against Magdeburg, from the Second Division, with a double from the Japanese Daichi Kamada.
Magdeburg only put up a fight during the first half, with Eintracht noticing the absence of Martin Hinteregger, who retired surprise at the end of the season aged just 29.
His absence, for now, has left a hole in Eintracht’s defence. The Austrian centre-back is life insurance for his team, which, without him, has yet to find the balance it needs to make the rear guard work as a near-perfect machine.
Doubts on the defense and Trapp for a penalty
That was where Eintracht went wrong, with a line of three central defenders unable to contain Magdeburg’s center forward Moritz Kwarteng. Almamy Touré, Tuta and Obite Ndicka have not put the puzzle together well despite the fact that it has worked at times, like in the Europa League final against Scottish Rangers where Hinteregger did not play.
This time they benefited from the poor success of Kwarteng, who lacked the right vision and missed some very clear chances after a difficult start in which Eintracht took the lead through Kamada after four minutes and Magdeburg’s penalty was wasted at seven. Kevin Trapp guessed Andreas Müller’s intentions and his teammates breathed a sigh of relief.
Kamada, wrecker
Trapp’s success and Kwarteng’s subsequent mistakes allowed Eintracht to go into the break with a two-goal lead. And that’s it, after half an hour, Jesper Lindstrom, with a good shot from outside the area, opened a gap on the scoreboard which was later completed again by Kamada. The Japanese midfielder proved to be a good striker and, as with the first goal, in the third he showed his credentials with a great shot coming from the second row.
And, with 0-3, when the match was winding, the Argentine Lucas Alario appeared to finish the party. With help from Colombian Rafael Santos Borré, Alario was unforgiving and Eintracht won 0-4 to show that, nine days before facing Real Madrid, he is in good form. Before, on Friday, he will open the welcome of the Bundesliga in Frankfurt no more or less than the champion Bayern Munich.
