The new captain of the European team of Ryder CupLuke Donaldhe is not sure if the players of LIV Golf they will participate in next year’s event, but he said he is focused on selecting the strongest team of twelve people to challenge the United States.

The 44-year-old Donald replaced Henrik Stenson as captain on Monday after the Swede was sacked days before he signed up for the lucrative Saudi-backed breakaway league. Golfers participating in LIV Golf events have been suspended by the PGA Tour and sanctioned by Europe’s DP World Tour.

“Part of being a captain is creating a strong unified team of twelve men, and I will do that over the next fourteen months,” Donald told reporters. “Hopefully, we can get some clarity on that situation and we can start making some decisions. There is an ongoing legal situation. But I don’t think that situation will be resolved soon,” he warned.

The LIV series is funded by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund and has shaken the sport to its core with Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau and Bubba Watson among its top names.

Donald, former world number 1, has made it clear that he has no intention of following the same path. “I have signed a contract and I intend to fulfill it. I give you my word that I will be here for the next fourteen months,” said the Englishman. “I’m excited about this opportunity,” he added.

The Ryder Cup will take place in Rome from September 29 to October 2 next year. The defending champion United States will be led by two-time Grand Slam winner Zach Johnson.
