Shinkwin won the Open from Gareth Bale

Date:

English Callum Shinkwin won, with a total of 272 strokes (-12), after a final round of 71 (one under par), at the Cazoo Open, of the DP World Tour (formerly the European Golf Circuit), played at Celtic Manor of Newport (Wales, United Kingdom), in what was his second victory as a professional, twenty-one months after he debuted in the Cyprus is open.

Shinkwin, 29 years old and number 304, who became the leader after the third day, took over the tournament with the former Real Madrid soccer player as host and financier Gareth Bale thanks this Sunday both to his excellent ‘putt’ success at medium distances, and to the bad day of the French Julien Guerrier, who led the first two days and delivered his worst card of the tournament with a 76 (+4), when he needed to be under par.

Almost no emotion. And it is that Guerrier has been denied his chances to win almost from the beginning of the day: four ‘bogeys’ in the first five holes, despite the ‘birdie’ in hole 2, removed him from the lead and even in second position . . Shinkwin, on the other hand, and despite making a bogey on hole 2, soon corrected his mistake and, with birdies on holes 4, 5 and 6, he already had an advantage that gave him the required peace of mind to adjust his shots and control a party colleague he saw as going astray.

The only relative concern for Shikwin came from Scotsman Connor Syme, third on the starting line, three strokes behind the Englishman; but only in the last stretch. The native of Kirkcaldy (Scotland) made a cautious first nine holes, with a ‘bogey’, but in his last eight, with an ‘eagle’ and three ‘birdies’ he gave some pressure.

Relative pressure for Shikwin who has maintained a wide advantage over his pursuers by three-four strokes, despite the fact that his course is not said to be brilliant: six birdies and five bogeys, successfully puttingt at distances close to in two -three meters. The Englishman, not in a hurry, won the Welsh Cazoo Open, his second professional victory, both on the European circuit, although it is now called the DP World Tour. For Syme the second place, four strokes.

Among the Spanish, the best is Nacho Elvirawho defends the title, in shared twelfth position, with a total of 282 (-2), after repeating this Sunday the pair he also made on Saturday. Alfredo Garcia Heredia there are a total of 284; while Ivan Cantero and Pep Angles they went to 286, and Jorge Campillo there are 288.
