the Romanian Simona Halep this Sunday captured the WTA 1000 in Canada for the third time in her career, by defeating the Brazilian 6-3, 2-6 and 6-2 Beatriz Haddad Maia at the end of toronto.
Halep, number 15 and former world number 1, added this Canadian victory to her achievements in 2016 and 2018, against a Haddad Maia who became the first Brazilian capable of reaching the final of a WTA 1,000 tournament.
The Romanian player now has 25 titles on his record, of which the titles of Roland Garros 2018 and Wimbledon 2019, and this victory will allow him to return to the group of ten best tennis players in the world. It will be number 6 in the ranking starting this Monday.
He needs to bring out his best competitive version to finish off Haddad Maia, who defeated the Polish Iga Swiateknumber 1 in the world, heading into this final.
The Brazilian, born in Rio de Janeiro in 1996, it was the star of vertical growth and in one year it went from position 183 to 24 in the ranking.
However, he saw the dream of adding the Canadian title to his record fade after those Birmingham and Nottingham.
Haddad Maia started in the best way, becoming in this tournament the first Brazilian capable of defeating the current number 1 in the world.
She escaped 3-0 with a break lead, but Halep reacted strongly, with a run of six games that allowed her to take the first set 6-3.
Haddad Maia had the merit of not letting herself be conditioned by her slump and knew how to fight back from the start in the second set, taking Halep’s serve in the first and third games to pave the way to solid 6 -2 .
In an attempt to calm down and regain her concentration, Halep headed to the locker room as, in the stands, more and more Brazilian flags accompanied chants in favor of Haddad Maia.
And the Romanian, contesting the 18th WTA final of her career, weighed in on her superior experience at the crucial moment.
He canceled out two break points in the first game and took his opponent’s serve in the second and fourth games, putting his path to the title down.
He won the match 6-3 after a battle of two hours and 16 minutes and celebrated his third Canadian crown.
After experiencing an injury-plagued 2021, Halep won her second title of 2022, after Melbourne WTA 250.
He also avenged the defeat that Haddad inflicted on him last year in the semifinals of the Birmingham tournament, on grass. He now has a 3-1 record against the Brazilian.
Halep and Haddad Maia both appear next week at the WTA 1,000 in Cincinnati, the final tournament in this category before the US Open begins on August 29.
