The Spanish Paula Badosa, who withdrew in the second round of the Toronto tournament due to injury, gave the Greek Maria Sakkari the third place in the world tennis ranking, which continues to be led by the Polish Iga Swiatek who is ahead of the Estonian Anett Kontaveit.
Badosa, who started as the fourth seed at the Canadian Masters, suffered the injury on Wednesday during her match with Kazakh Yelina Putintseva and had to withdraw from the tournament.
Victory in Toronto – the third of her career – went to Romanian Simona Halep, who defeated Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia in the final.
Halep, former world number 1 and now with 25 titles to her name, rose nine places in the rankings to sixth, while Haddad Maia, the first Brazilian to reach the final of a WTA 1,000 tournament, rose eight until 16.
Spaniard Garbiñe Muguruza dropped one place and is now eighth, while Sara Sorribes surrendered seven out of 48.
