The clarification of the message comes at a time when Musk is trying to get out of a $44 billion deal to buy Twitter, just four months after the social network announced it would buy its parent company, which led him to the courts. .
Musk has a history of being offbeat and posting irreverent messages, making it sometimes hard to tell if he’s joking. “The next thing I’m going to do is buy Coca-Cola to bring back the cocaine,” he tweeted on April 27, two days after Twitter’s board of directors accepted his unsolicited offer to buy the company.
Musk’s messages about possible acquisitions have landed him in hot water with US regulators in the past. In 2018, he wrote that there was “secured funding” for a $72 billion deal to take Tesla private, but an offer never followed through. Musk and Tesla paid $20 million in civil penalties – and Musk resigned as Tesla chairman – to settle claims by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that Musk defrauded investors.
The SEC did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Musk’s tweet in which he said he was buying the club outside of normal business hours.
