Volvo presents the safest vehicle in its range, the EX90

Volvo has presented its next SUV, the former90, a model designed to achieve a goal: are a fully electric, elegant and efficient family car, with a higher safety level than all previous Volvo’s. And it is that for the Scandinavian brand, functionality and safety do not have to sacrifice aesthetics. One of the most prominent examples is the way they integrated Lidar, which is standard on the Volvo EX90. Lidar is an external detection system that has a
pulsed laser to accurately measure the distances And that can, for example, detect a pedestrian up to 250 meters away.

And in the process of approaching uncontrolled autonomous driving, Lidar is one of our safety cornerstones. “Integrating Lidar to make it look good and optimal for their security applications was quite a design challenge,” he says.
T. Jon Mayer, Responsible for external design. «It is just like the eyes of the vehicle; Therefore, although you could have them around the grill area – what would be as if you had your eyes on your knees – it is much more logical to make them as above, at the top of the head, to maximize the field of vision for that reason, and in front of
Maximize its effectivenesswe decided with our engineers to integrate it into the roofline,” he adds.

The external profile design of an electric vehicle is an opportunity to increase efficiency. A good electric vehicle has a smooth, smooth and optimized surface: aerodynamic drag is the enemy of efficiency. For example, they have designed the Volvo EX90, with the aim of optimizing their autonomy and concentrating on reducing aerodynamic resistance and air resistance.

The elegant and rounded front, combined with elements such as moons and handles from the doors, ensures that the air flows backwards continuously. All this influences the so -called aerodynamic coefficient, which is used to show the aerodynamic efficiency of the vehicle. Thanks to these external design options, the Volvo EX90 achieves an aerodynamic coefficient of 0.29, a very competitive number for a large SUV with seven seats.

“In creating the beautiful, elegant proportions of the Volvo EX90, we took inspiration from sailboat design,” explains Mayer. “Proud and confident, the front is inspired by a candle lip’s ability to cross the raging waves of the ocean. But overall it’s also rounded, which allows air to flow more efficiently through the vehicle. ”

For many of the Volvo EX90’s design choices, the source of inspiration is also linked to its Scandinavian roots. The clear and long days of the Scandinavian summers, which find their reflection in the dark and melancholy of winter while the station is changing, inspired to absorb a panoramic roof and a lot of glass in the cabin, to all the possible light to let it go.

“We have paid a lot of attention to the lighting of the interior of the former 90, in an attempt to create a warm place, and a somewhat colder expression for the outside,” explains Mayer. “It is also related to the way you perceive Scandinavians. His quiet and discreet confidence may seem cold at first, but once you get to know them, you discover that they are really warm. The same trust is exactly what we are trying to convey to the expression of our vehicles, “he concludes.
