Iconic cars that inspire the vehicles of the future

Date:

“Lancia Design Day” is the event that will mark Lancia’s Renaissance on November 28. With this important date, the company wants to describe the style of some of its most famous iconic vehicles of the past, which have inspired the design of its three future cars.

In this journey from the past to the future, the protagonists are
Lancia cars that have come to the collective imagination: from the Aurelia to the Flaminia, from the Fulvia to the Beta HPE, from the Gamma to the Delta, via the Stratos or the 037. Models that are very different from each other, some with a graceful and elegant design, other bold and efficient; but all united by a style capable of going beyond space and time. This is what distinguishes them today through their beauty and contemporaryness, and through the expression of a typical Italian design.

“The design and beauty of these ‘moving masterpieces’ have inspired us to create
the three Lancia models of the future» says Luca Napolitano, CEO of the Lancia brand. “This includes the new Ypsilon in 2024, our new flagship that will allow us to enter the largest segment in Europe, and the muscular new “Delta” in 2028, with its geometric lines that will capture the hearts of countless fans across Europe. We define Lancia likes to be a brand of “classic modernity”, where “classic” means strengthening and respecting our heritage, while “modernity” expresses our ability to look to the future with ambition.

Innovation and timeless design have always been our values and we want to add sustainability and responsibility to that, always keeping the customer at the center of our mission. These are the guidelines of our 10-year Renaissance plan: today we want to become a credible and respected brand in the European premium market. The protagonists of this roadmap will be the three new Lancia models, which we have designed to be consistent with each other and clearly recognizable.

the three vehicles
will feature three distinctive design elements from Lancia: the “cup”, sinuous lines and primitive geometric shapes. Inspired by the front of the emblematic Aurelia and Delta, the new “cup” will be reinterpreted in a modern key, but maintaining its distinctive feature, uniting a vertical and a horizontal line that, when merged, the logo of the brand.

In addition, the three new models will feature serpentine lines on the side, a typical element of some historic Lancia models, such as the Aurelia B20. Finally, there is a third element of Lancia’s design: the primitive geometric shapes present both front and rear, including the round headlights that stand out, which refer to the most brutal and technical spirit of the brand,
winking at the legendary 037Stratos and Delta, the competitive “beasts” that dominated rallying for over 20 years.”

In addition to grace and grit, there is a third element of Lancia design: eclecticism, that is, the tendency to draw inspiration from different sources, even in opposition to each other, in order to achieve a harmonious and coherent synthesis. This happens, for example, in Italian homes, an intimate and lively living space, from which Lancia was inspired to create the original and welcoming interiors of the Gamma and Beta models. The same inner refinement is found
in the 1965 Fulvia Coupe, elegant, aggressive and at the same time high performance. And this is also an example of Lancia’s eclecticism.

The Lancia Beta HPE (High Performance Estate) is a beautiful, sporty, high-performance family car that is low and elegant, with a spacious trunk. Designed by Pininfarina and manufactured in three series, it is undoubtedly
the most fascinating version of the Lancia Beta model. Unveiled at the 1975 Geneva Motor Show, the Lancia Beta HPE convinced the general public with its eclectic character presented as ‘practical elegance’.

Striking is the rear part of the passenger compartment, equipped with a large sloping hatch, from which an innovative blind construction can be seen behind the glass, which limits the effect of sunlight and ensures the rear view. This innovative solution is complemented by two profiles on the third pillar that visually overlap
with the original finish applied to the rear window.

Also at the rear, but this time inside, the enveloping rear seat backs stand out, which extend to the side trim below the windows, giving the occupants a free position. The rear headrests are extendable, so they are integrated into the backrest when not in use. Surely,
the spacious and innovative interior of the Beta HPE is reminiscent of the warm and welcoming atmosphere of beautiful Italian homes. A curiosity: by folding down the rear seats, it is even possible to insert a mattress to create a sort of “mobile” bed.

At the 1976 Geneva Motor Show, Lancia showed the futuristic design of the presented Lancia Gamma Coupé. With a classic exterior and an eclectic interior, this car will be remembered
as the “travel room”. It was given this nickname because the interior creates a welcoming, comfortable environment and an innovative atmosphere, as evidenced by an original color scheme and dashboard inspired by 1970s design.

The refinement and absolute quality of the materials are the result of collaborations with some prestigious fashion brands, including the house Ermenegildo Zegna.

The latest evolution of Lancia’s great GT coupes, a noble range that includes the Aurelia and Flaminia, the Coupé range is inspired by the Flaminia Coupé. And maybe that’s why, at first glance,
looks more elegant and stylish than the five-door sedan, thanks in part to the sloping roofline.
