Mercedes-Benz AMG S-Class hybrid with Formula 1 technology

Date:

4.0-liter V8 engine at the front and electric motor on the rear axle for a system power of 802 hp

The S-Class has always played an important role for Mercedes-AMG. More than 50 years ago, the founders already showed that they could transform
a luxury sedan in a very sporty vehicle with an innovative Swabian spirit. The sports and performance car brand from Affalterbach set its first milestone in 1971 with the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.8 AMG. Today the new Mercedes-AMG S 63 E PERFORMANCE (combined weighted fuel consumption: 4.4 l/100 km, weighted CO2 emissions, combined cycle: 100 g/km, weighted electricity consumption, combined cycle: 21.4 kWh /100 km ) with hybrid technology, AMG once again sets standards in the segment.

The E PERFORMANCE model combines AMG’s 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine with the AMG-specific hybrid powertrain and a new expansion phase of
the AMG high-performance battery (HPB). The new HPB 150 is based on the directly cooled, powerful battery cells of the well-known HPB 80. The energy content increases from 6.1 in the HPB 80 to 13.1 kWh in the HPB 150. This increases the range purely electrically to 33 kilometers .

However, the powertrain focuses less on electric range and more
best-in-class performance. With an output of 590 kW (802 hp) and a torque of 1,430 Nm, the sedan sets new standards in the segment. The acceleration to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and the optional top speed of 290 km/h underline the superiority of dynamic driving. Systems such as the AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension, the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL roll stabilization and standard rear-axle steering ensure a wide margin between driving dynamics and comfort.

In the new Mercedes-AMG S 63 E PERFORMANCE, the 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine is combined with a permanently excited synchronous electric motor, a high-performance battery developed in Affalterbach and the fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive.
System power 590 kW (802 hp) and a maximum system torque of 1,430 Nm ensure impressive driving performance: acceleration from standstill to 100 km/h takes 3.3 seconds. The ride only stops at an electronically controlled 290 km/h (with the optional AMG Driver’s Package).

The 140 kW (190 hp) electric motor it is located on the rear axle, where it is integrated into a compact Electric Drive Unit (EDU) together with an electrically operated two-speed gearbox and the electronically controlled locking differential on the rear axle. Specialists call a vehicle based on this configuration “P3-Hybrid”. The powerful battery is also located at the rear, above the rear axle.

The decisive advantage of this position of the UDE is the bypass of the 9-speed gearbox, which is flanged to the V8 engine. The position behind the gearbox allows full use of the torque of both drives. Result: more than 1,430 Nm of torque from the system, a new record in the category.

The pro’s of
Mercedes-AMG S 63 E PERFORMANCE are also reflected in the expressive exterior design. For the first time, an S-Class Saloon features the AMG-specific radiator grille with vertical grilles and a large central star. Instead of the former Mercedes radiator star figure, the AMG emblem is now applied in silver/black chrome. In addition, the front apron in jetwing design with large side air intakes and
functional air curtains features the front view. In the side view, the forged AMG wheels up to 21 inches and the AMG-specific side panels stand out. At the rear you can see characteristic design features of the 63 models, such as the trapezoidal and fluted moldings on the twin tailpipes or the wide diffuser with longitudinal fins and diffuser table.

The interior combines the high-quality equipment of the S-Class with specific AMG elements. Seats with special AMG graphics and
signature stitching underline the refined look. Exclusive colors and various nappa leather upholstery with embossed AMG emblem on the front head restraints emphasize the sporty or luxurious side of the S 63 E PERFORMANCE. The claim to leadership in the segment is also evident in the premium rear end and the multicontour seats for all four seats. Added to this are the AMG-specific trim elements and the standard AMG Performance steering wheel with AMG steering wheel buttons.

The MBUX infotainment system includes various AMG and hybrid-specific displays and functions. These are the screens in the instrument panel, the central vertical multimedia screen in the center console and the optional head-up display.

The display of the instrument panel can be customized with different display styles and individually selectable main views. The AMG-specific Supersport styling offers the possibility to display different content via a vertical menu structure. Below them is a menu
with hybrid-specific temperatures or a settings menu with the current suspension or transmission settings. In addition, Supersport style drivers can also view a navigation map, fuel consumption data or all available telemetry data in AMG TRACK PACE.

The Head-Up Display also offers
AMG’s own rendering stylessuch as Race and Supersport. They are accessible from the instrument panel’s main menu. The high-quality graphics of the multimedia display visualizes the power flow of the entire transmission system, the speed, power, torque and temperature of the electric machine, as well as the temperature of the battery.

The Dolby Atmos sound format takes the indoor audio experience to a new level. It makes it possible, among other things
place instruments or voices of the audio mix around the acoustic area. This enables a new type of sound animation. While conventional stereo systems use two channels to drive the speakers, Dolby Atmos can use the full range and create a 360-degree experience.
