Hyundai Motor Group robots go live with “pilot programs” to promote last-mile delivery. A service started at the Rolling Hills hotel, where a PnD-based robot is used to deliver services, food and drinks directly to the customer’s room. Based on the results of the pilot program, the Group plans to use and expand

The delivery robot consists of a storage unit integrated on top of a PnD drive unit. In addition to the cargo box used to deliver the items, a connected screen displays information to customers.

The Group’s modular PnD platform was first unveiled at CES 2022
an all-in-one unit single wheel drive system that intelligently combines steering, braking, electric wheel drive and suspension hardware, including a steering actuator for 360 degrees of holonomic rotation. It moves autonomously using LiDAR and camera sensors. Thanks to an integrated storage unit, the robot can transport products to customers.

By adding autonomous driving, the PnD-based robot can find the optimal route within the zone to deliver packages to recipients. It can recognize and avoid fixed and moving objects and drive smoothly, ensuring fast delivery time.

“PnD-based delivery robots speed up delivery times and improve safety through autonomous driving technology, allowing obstacles to be quickly avoided,” he said.

The hotel service robot
uses a deep learning algorithm to recognize the environment and the people around it. When the robot arrives in the room, it recognizes the opening of the door and as soon as it detects the receiver, it automatically opens the storage compartment for them.

The robot can communicate appropriate messages on the screen and in an appropriate tone, depending on the recipient. Also, when moving between floors, the unit can determine how many people get into an elevator and wait for the next one if the first one is overcrowded.

The self-driving robot is also adept at avoiding obstacles and collisions, even in narrow hotel corridors, and can navigate between floors without human assistance thanks to electronic connectivity to elevators, delivering goods along an optimal route.

The group too
works with Woowa Brothersa Korean delivery company that has been operating the Baemin food delivery app since March 2021 to further develop the technology and service capabilities of last-mile outdoor delivery robots.

As part of a new program with Woowa Brothers, the group’s delivery robot is being used for door-to-door (D2D) food services in a residential/commercial complex on the outskirts of Seoul. After a customer does
an online order through Baeminthe robot finds the exact item in a mall connected to a residential commercial complex and delivers it to the customer’s doorstep.

To enable the service, the Group uses wireless communications to access community entrance doors and elevators, a problem that has previously been an obstacle to commercializing the robot delivery service. The service robot can enter the apartment building, access the upper floors through the elevator control system
and deliver the food to the customer’s home.

Technology that enables service robots to move in and out autonomously and deliver food without human assistance has led to a delivery innovation that is attracting
great attention from the logistics sectors and retail. The Group expects last-mile delivery robots to significantly increase the efficiency of the entire delivery process.

Based on the results of these pilot programs, the Group plans to improve its PnD-based robot delivery services and gradually increase the number of robots and their operating hours. It also plants
expand your business into commercial areas who need delivery services to connect with customers.
