Solterra: we tested Subaru’s first electric

Date:

The model, which will go on sale in Spain from November, will retain the brand’s traditional 4X4 configuration

The Solterra is the first 100% electric car from the Japanese brand, which will be launched in Spain in November 2022. It is a model that was developed together with Toyota. While the two companies pooled their expertise to create a brand new foundation, Subaru’s goal was to achieve superior passive safety and better vehicle stability while retaining the essentials and signature 4×4 drive on all models. The two companies have highlighted their respective strengths, such as Subaru’s longstanding and successful All Wheel Drive technology and Toyota’s vehicle electrification technology.

The Solterra has two electric motors of 109 hp each, for a total of 218 hp, good for a range of up to 466 km in the combined cycle and 610 km in the city (WLTP). The 91-cell lithium-ion battery has a capacity of 71.4 kWh; charging is done by alternating current, which is possible with up to 6.6 kW and with continuous current of 150 kW, charging to 80% in just 17 minutes. In addition, the battery is designed to maintain at least 90% of its capacity for the first ten years of the vehicle.

Subariu has applied a new system in this model that drives the front and rear wheels with independent motors. It features the X-MODE AWD dual-function control system (snow/dirt and deep snow/mud), which is significantly enhanced by the powerful torque and responsiveness of the two independent motors, enhancing the driving feel. condition. Adding the new Grip Control function allows the vehicle to drive at a constant speed and stabilizes it even on rough roads.

The driver can choose between three driving modes: Eco, Normal and Power, in addition to being able to adjust regenerative braking via the paddles behind the steering wheel. The S-pedal also allows the new Subaru Solterra to accelerate or brake gradually, allowing the vehicle to stop even without pressing the brake pedal.

During the short dynamic test that we were able to perform with the vehicle in closed circuit and off-road conditions, we were able to verify the comfort of the vehicle, even when driving on a dirt road with numerous irregularities. The response of the electric motors is immediate, as is the 4X4 traction, which allows us to face the unevenness of the surface without fear. The controls are accessible and the position behind the wheel is more reminiscent of a sedan or compact car than an SUV or SUV. We also have a large number of holes to deposit objects in, in addition to a 452 liter suitcase. The rear seat offers more than enough space for three travelers to travel in comfort.

From the outside, the first thing that catches the eye is the jointless hexagonal grille, typical of electric vehicles and whose shape has already become a distinctive sign of the brand, as the Outback and Forester have already made progress.

Engine: two electric with a total of 218 CV

Top speed: 160 km/h

Consumption: 16kWh/100km

Length/width/height (in meters): 4.69/1.86/1.65

Trunk: 452 liters

Inside the new Solterra, a comfortable environment stands out in each of its seats, and where the eye is focused on the large instrument panel (12.3”) in the center console. Control buttons are within easy reach. Details such as the wireless charger for the mobile phone, the panoramic roof, a suitcase with a capacity of 452 liters or the quality of the artificial leather on the seats do not go unnoticed.
