Due to the market decline, the age of the park has increased to an average of 13.4 years
The Treasury has collected 4,215 million euros before taxes linked to the purchase of vehicles in 2021, which represents a reduction of 1,200 million compared to 2019, the last “normal” year in number of registrations and prior to the Covid-19 pandemic. Broken down by type of tax, the state treasury amounted to 467 million euros for registration tax (+25%) and 3,748 for VAT (+5%).
These are the figures provided by the dealer association Faconauto during the General Assembly held this Tuesday in Madrid. According to President Gerardo Pérez, these data reflect the bad moment in which vehicle registrations are going through in our country. Pérez assures that “the perfect storm that the car industry is going through is taking us to a level of registrations far from what Spain requires”, about 1.2 million. This already has consequences for the contribution to the collection of car taxes, as well as for the unstoppable aging of the vehicle fleet, which increased by an average of 0.4 years to 13.6 years last year.
This delicate moment is now widely mediated by the effects of the war in Ukraine, the rise in prices or the sharp rise in fuel costs on family economies. For this reason, although they expect some improvement in the situation in the second half of the year, employers are maintaining a low sales forecast, at around 830,000 units, which would justify the adoption of cyclical and shock measures that contribute to reversing this situation. . From Faconauto, they believe that Spain should register figures that are comparable to those before the pandemic.
To reverse this situation, the administrator is demanding the implementation of decarbonization plans for the park, taking advantage of the establishment of Low Emission Zones (ZBE), which will be mandatory by 2023 in cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants.
Dealer employers believe that between now and the end of the year this situation can be used to develop plans that encourage vehicle purchases with amounts that vary depending on the environmental classification of the DGT (0, ECO or C). Dealers are already working to implement this type of compensation system to achieve the goal of climate neutrality, making it affordable “even for citizens who do not have the means to purchase a 100% electric car”.
